CHICAGO – The American Medical Association (AMA) today introduced its latest product designed to connect physicians with volunteer opportunities and supplemental short-term work in the field of medicine. The new Physician Opportunities Portal is an interactive tool that can help physicians identify opportunities beyond their workplace that can potentially add longevity to their careers and increase satisfaction by giving back.

The Portal features a variety of volunteer and paid short-term work, including consulting, legal expert, locum tenens, as well as opportunities in health and wellness, and emergency and safety.

“Physicians across the country – particularly those in small practices – are working in a rapidly evolving health care landscape, which is why the AMA is developing new solutions to enhance the life and career of physicians practicing medicine,” said AMA President Andrew W. Gurman, M.D. “The tool announced today builds on AMA initiatives to support physicians and physicians in training so they can have meaningful and rewarding careers. We will continue to provide physicians with the tools they need to help reduce burnout associated with administrative burdens and government regulations and restore joy in medicine to better serve their patients.”

In addition to the Physician Opportunities Portal, the AMA has several additional career-focused resources for America’s physicians:

• The AMA Career Planning Resource to help guide medical students, residents, fellows and young physicians as they navigate through issues that arise in preparing for and experiencing a life in medicine. The web-based tool provides resources to aid physicians in developing the skills they need to succeed at every stage of their career from choosing a medical specialty, to resident life to managing finances and ensuring lifelong wellness.
• The JAMA Career Center provides physicians with career opportunities, news and information relevant to the full spectrum of medical practice. The Career Center offers job postings in nearly every specialty, practice setting and region across the country—ranging from rural and underserved areas to thriving towns and metropolitan centers.
• Launched in 2015, the AMA’s STEPS Forward™ program provides physicians with educational modules to help enhance practice efficiency, professional satisfaction, and the delivery of patient care.
• AMA’s Health Workforce Mapper is an interactive tool that provides physicians and other health care providers access to information and data to identify health professional shortage areas, hospital locations, population health, as well as other related workforce trends that can be used to determine practice locations.
